Lost Patterns was a dance piece choreographed by MFA Candidate Rebecca Hill as a part of the 2022 Spring MFA Dance Concert at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Lost Patterns celebrated the percussive dance form of Appalachian flatfooting. In exploring the ability of dancers to be not only dancers, but also musicians, the piece operated itself as a piece of music; using dance as score and movement. We shaped the piece as the cycle of a day, beginning and ending at dawn- a reflection of the cycle of the dance itself, handed down from artist to artist, and part of a lively and welcoming community that exists around it. Rebecca and I wanted to celebrate the natural texture of the light in this environment- early morning light on the hills and through the trees; the smoke filled dance halls where the form is learned; and the late night walk home, until the sun rises again.
